After two years of research and development, NoDesign conceived, designed and managed the industrial development of this new diagnostic tool, bringing technology to hair beauty. Completing the ‘Hair Rituel’ range of products, this connected device provides a fast diagnosis of the scalp and hair fiber, enabling Sisley beauty advisors to better assist their customers in recommending treatments appropriate to their hair's health.

Innovation through design
To develop this unique device in the beauty world, Sisley's innovation teams approached NoDesign to imagine and configure the design of this new offering. The studio supported Sisley from an exploratory phase of prefiguring technologies, followed by an iterative phase of building functional prototypes, in order to validate the technical architecture and technological choices of the device. NoDesign then designed the solution, the product and its interface and followed-up its industrial production.

Optical Science
Observing the hair fiber on the surface of the hair with a portable and easy to use device has been a major challenge. No electronic microscopes on the market at the time allowed such a level of precision. The weakness of most of these models was poor-quality optics and poorly optimized subject lighting to achieve the desired results.
Inspired by Fresnel's work on light-concentrating optics, our experiments with light led to the development of a custom lens. This key component allows the convergence of light from a ring of bright LEDs at a precise focal point, in order to irradiate the hair fiber and reveal its scales. The lighting conditions are thus optimal for the digital sensor to capture the smallest detail of the hair's surface.

Unlike an heavy machine learning approach, which requires a substantial dataset to produce reliable results, our approach is based on symbolic AI technology that made it possible to produce tangible and explicit results from a relatively small set of images,.

The Hair Ritual Analyzer allows you to visualize both the scalp (110x magnification) and the hair fiber (900x) thanks to an ultra-precise digital photographic sensor coupled with a specific mechanical system.
High-quality image capture combined with the power of artificial intelligence allows for a complete hair diagnosis in less than 3 minutes.
This scalp and hair fiber analysis considers seven different parameters. At the scalp level: scalp uniformity, scalp sensitivity, pore condition, scalp hydration, and hair density are measured. At the hair fiber level: fiber diameter and the condition of the fiber surface (scale) are assessed.
High-quality image capture combined with the power of artificial intelligence allows for a complete hair diagnosis in less than 3 minutes.

This project embodies all aspects of NoDesign's approach to innovation through design. This holistic approach has enabled to reach the goal of building a connected expert tool capable of performing an accurate, reliable, and personalized diagnosis of the condition of the scalp and hair fiber in just a few minutes.
