The Museum of Fashion and Design in Lisbon currently has a very beautiful exhibition on scooters.

Scooter Français Mors
Scooter Bits, designed by Jean Henri Labourdette

Scoot always ....
The scooter was born in Italy in the conversion by Paggio a stock engine starters for aircraft wheels and landing gear after the war in 1946. Efficient vehicle, closer to the car than the bike, he received the name Vespa, "wasp" in Italian. He was soon followed by the Innocenti company metallurgist with the Lambretta ... Not very stable, capable of carrying two people and luggage, and easy to use, attractive silhouette, they won a huge success in the late 50s, allowing access to mobility, including women and young girls.

Show Mostra
The exhibition at the Museum of Lisbon MUDE is successful in several respects:
It is based on the unique collection of "amateur" Portuguese joao Seixas. His passion led him to create this collection of scooters sold or imported for most of them in Portugal. From memory, the imports in the Portuguese market, the national dimension is present, it spins a yarn with the country's history and people. Joao Seixas, a man of culture has been the design icon Portuguese: Daciano da Costa I had the chance to meet at a conference on the future of the two wheels in Portugal ... there are fifteen year.
This exhibit is also an industrial history English, German, French and especially Italian but also Belgian, Portuguese, Czech, American and German is.

Road
The layout of the architect is Frederico Valssassino quality, signed and credited. (This is not always the case in exhibitions seen this summer in Lisbon). It is an architectural scenography: simple road and almost brutal (a quality in the context of building).

Hercules
Hercules, designer Louis Lepoix were in my board Diploma

"There vai ela, formosa e segura"
The catalog is of high quality and well documented. There are texts of funds, archive images and advertisements. The collection is very well photographed. It is beyond the specialized book-lover of self or mechanical device. It is a catalog of references that we are dealing. One can only regret about a partial approach, the historical issues, customs, culture, poetry, literary and social scooter are conventionally presented. But we may regret the absence from them about the brands, industry and the economy, which is troubling for an exhibition in a museum of design. The exhibition shows clearly that they are not technologically outstanding, the proliferation of scooters in the years 50 and 60 years really shows what innovation. It is startling to see these scooters sometimes from very small brands, invest in tooling for sheet metal consequential or conversely produced by luxury coach builders (Labourdette). It abounds in contrast to today's levels. Because the French, I am seized of the dynamism of these brands forgotten: Bits, Bernardet, Terrot Motobecane, Solex, only Peugeot adventure continues today.
One can also appreciate talent, "naive and costs" of these designers, illustrators or bodybuilders forgotten Lepoix Louis, Brissonet, Labourdette or Geo Ham. While the Italian masters are present, including Lambretta.

Scooter Mors
I particularly like this scooter with his French Mors Speed essential design (NoDesign). It is close to the models " Ruckus "Honda's presence in Japan and Europe.

History collection (neurs)
The Mude, that is to say, the Museum for hosting this exhibition, consists of a bottom left by a special collector: Francisco Capello. This collection consists of couture clothing including many French pieces and furniture among the most outstanding (including a sofa Matta surprising).
This collection has been wandering evicted from her previous exhibition venue Cultural Centre of Belem, the installation of a private collection of contemporary art (Berardo). Another tension between Art and Design, a symbol.
The Lisbon City Council received this collection and found her a casket at its height, a former bank building, whose interior is in-between a style 60 years of institutional and unfinished construction. (Imagine this in the old Paris stock exchange).

the Mude, led by Barbara Coutinho has a magnificent collection. We proved with the exhibition "Scooter, ela vai there, formosa e segura" that can produce exhibition quality. Chief among these qualities is its roots in the Portuguese context. This is a challenge in this country who has owned a small factory Scooter "Casal".
This contextually anchor design in the life and memory of people is a tribute to the design.
Here we are miles away from the ambitious Experienced Design , the biannual "Show" that attempts to promote Design "curator" out of the Portuguese context.
Barbara Coutinho then succeeded by a magnificent demonstration of the possible role of a museum of design. Bravo to the team.

I could take some photos stolen, it is forbidden ... A very lovely girl I scolded. She knew the location of design ... and gave me the contacts to be able to make a photograph. While being on the internet, I proceeded differently. But I could not resist posting the stolen photos of my favorite models, she apologize.
